| Gov't cites BPO as main driver for service sector growth | |||||

The service industry grew to 6.1 percent in the first quarter of 2010 compared to 1.9 percent in 2009, attributing the growth mainly to the BPO industry which has become a $7.2 billion industry in 2009. Commission on Information and Communications Technology Secretary Ray Anthony Roxas-Chua III in the same press briefing said that despite the effects of the global economic crisis, the BPO industry grew by 19 percent and generated 440,000 employees despite recession last year. June is also observed this year as the National Information and Communications Technology Month. The celebration seen as a positive prelude to a stronger collaboration among stakeholders and a more enhanced business climate for the ICT-BPO (business process outsourcing) of the country with the strong commitment of major cities and provinces under the National ICT Confederation of the Philippines (NICP), NICP Chair and Bacolod City Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue said in a statement.
